What Is a Nidhi Company?
A plain-language explanation of the mutual-benefit model and what it means for you as a member.
The mutual-benefit principle
A Nidhi company is a mutual-benefit company. Its core purpose is to cultivate the habit of thrift and savings among its members, and to lend to its members from the funds those members have contributed — for their mutual benefit. Members are both the savers and the borrowers.
This structure is fundamentally different from a bank or a public finance company. A Nidhi does not take deposits from, or lend to, the general public. Every transaction is between the company and one of its own approved members.
How a Nidhi differs from a bank
| Aspect | Nidhi company | Bank |
|---|---|---|
| Who it serves | Approved members only | The general public |
| Purpose | Mutual benefit of members: savings and secured lending | Full range of commercial banking services |
| Regulatory framework | Operates under the Companies Act and applicable Nidhi rules | Licensed and regulated as a bank by the RBI |
| Lending | Secured loans to members, within prescribed limits | Broad secured and unsecured lending |
| Public solicitation | Public advertisement for deposits is not permitted | May advertise deposit products publicly |
Important: Nidhi companies are not registered with or regulated by the Reserve Bank of India as banks or NBFCs; they operate under a separate statutory framework. Any claim that a Nidhi company is “RBI-approved” or “RBI-backed” is false. Anjani Nidhi makes no such claim.
